Organic Homemade Applesauce

When you have Crohn’s and Colitis, and are in a flare, the last thing you want to do is eat food let alone food that is hard to digest. It’s best to stick to pureed, completely cook or juiced food.

This applesauce is always a life saver for me and I know while eating it I’m fueling my body with healthy and healing ingredients. I always make a large batch so I know I’ll have some in hand for about 7-10 days. Please feel free to reduce the recipe in half or thirds if you don’t feel you need as much.

Organic Homemade Applesauce

Recipe by Heather MoffattCourse: Sides

Delicious and easy to digest nourishing organic applesauce.

Ingredients

  • 14-16 Organic Granny Smith Apples

  • 2 Organic Lemons juiced

  • 2/3 cup Organic Pure Maple Syrup (I usually buy grade A)

  • 1/4 tsp Celtic Sea Salt

  • 1-2 tsp Organic Cinnamon (optional)

  • 1/2 tsp Organic Nutmeg (optional)

Directions

  • Peel and dice all the apples and juice both lemons
  • Place all the ingredients in a large pot with a lid and place on the stove on medium/high heat. (If adding cinnamon start with 1 tsp and add more at the end if more cinnamon is desired)
  • Once mixture starts to boil, cover pot with lid, reduce heat to simmer and simmer for 30 minutes.
  • At the 30 minute mark, remove lid and start mashing the apples with a potato masher or immersion blender until no chunks remain. If some of the apples are still firm, place the lid back on the pot and continue simmering for about 5-10 minutes.
  • After you get your applesauce to a pureed consistency, remove from heat and transfer to a glass storage container.
  • Let applesauce cool to room temperature, cover and place in the refrigerator . (I like my applesauce the next day when cold but if you like it warm eat right away)

Notes

  • After mashing the applesauce adjust cinnamon, maple syrup and nutmeg to your liking.
